An audit of the appropriateness of hospital admissions for COPD exacerbations.

Primary objective was to assess the appropriateness of our hospital admissions for COPD exacerbations as per NICE guidelines. We also assessed the quality of their outpatient COPD medical care.All COPD related admissions Mar-May 2007 were prospectively reviewed. 16 variables as per NICE guidelines were considered with one point for each variable. A score of zero was considered an inappropriate admission while ≥1 was appropriate.

Yield of Investigations for Atrial Fibrillation amongst Acute Ischaemic Stroke and TIA Patients in an Irish General Hospital.

Atrial fibrillation is the commonest cardiac arrhythmia affecting as many as 10% of patients aged over 70. It increases the risk of ischaemic stroke 5 fold. This excess risk can be reduced by approximately 70% using anti-coagulation therapy INR target 2-3. Detection of atrial fibrillation is therefore a critical component of secondary prevention therapy in patients post ischaemic stroke/TIA. (for full article click

Trans Thoracic Echo (TTE) is frequently used in patents presenting with ischemic stroke to detect direct source of embolism or conditions known to be associated with cardio embolism. It is also used to refine risk in conditions known to be associated with embolism. The aim was to investigate yield of TTE in aforementioned clinical scenarios and to examine if it alters patients` management.
